Episode 132 - Listen Up Folks!

More value was added, more friends were made and another milestone was reached! The guys were joined this week by a slew of "younger" surveyors with a wide range of experience levels including one that has been surveying for less than a week! Tyler Lapointe, Austin Maxwell, Nik Schlosser, Anissa Williston and Tate Childers were all participants on this week's show making it the most guests we've ever had on a single episode! This creates a number of technical challenges and lessons learned (which is a really good thing!), but we promise that there is a ton to glean from this conversation if you'll power through it! Just some of the topics discussed include the skillset required for surveyors today...and in the future, stereotypes, the importance of image/perception, roles of younger surveyors, making yourself marketable, changing the culture, and how more engineers are becoming surveyors! Episode 131 - Travis ”Maverick” Bohan, PLS

"WE feel the need...the need for speed"!! The guys were joined this week by Travis Bohan, PLS. Travis is not only a handsome man resembling DD's man crush Tom Cruise, but also a very talented and insightful professional land surveyor who also does all his own stunts. Travis is a Survey Manager at Mark Thomas & Company. Little known fact, Mark Thomas was the first consultant allowed to design improvements to Caltrans facilities, with the I-880 Widening project in Santa Clara County in 1987!! We covered a ton during this episode including the challenges of performing survey on mega transportations projects, applying the right technology for each phase of a project to increase efficiency and profit without sacrificing accuracy, importance of the right education for land surveyors, creative yet effective ways to promote the profession (and yourself!), what folks can do to make themselves more marketable and a bunch more that I can't remember at the moment thanks to the leftover Garrison Brothers whiskey! Episode 130 - Charlie Garrison ”Whiskey Peddler”

What...a...show! If you like whiskey, great storytelling and unscripted conversation, this is for you! Charlie Garrison, the self-proclaimed much better looking and wiser half of the Garrison Brothers Distilling tandem joined the guys this week. Garrison Brothers produced the first "legal" bourbon in Texas and has never looked back! We talked all things whiskey as we tasted our way through an impressive lineup of Garrison Brothers fine bourbon. Needless to say, new friends were made and value was added! Episode 129 - Dr. Charles A. ”Tony” Nettleman III, PLS, Esq.

Let us start out by simply saying that we are so blessed and humbled to have the opportunity to have candid conversations with people like Dr. Nettleman. That said, time to stir things up! The cast this week included the usual suspects along with Peta Cox and Nik Schlosser. The different perspectives made this a great conversation that touched on topics like the "numbers", addressing an aging profession, the effects innovation has on a profession, accessibility/portability of licensure, how arrogance & pride leads to building walls, competing professions, "we've always done it that way" and the importance of always "sharpening your blade"! Episode 128 - Russell White & Josh Feemster from Dimensional Geomatics

Another first for the Geoholics! Russell "Russ" White & Josh Feemster of Dimensional Geomatics joined the guys this week from an oil rig platform in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. Providing industry leading geomatics’ services worldwide, Russ, Josh and DG take on the projects most shy away from. Needless to say there were some great stories shared throughout this conversation. "Beyond the Nominal" = No BS! Mark Taylor was the co-host with music provided by Stone Temple Pilots!

Episode 127 - Steve Rienks, PE, PMP

Who knew there were so many interesting PE's?!?!?! The guys were joined this week by one of DD's fellow Chicagoans, Mr. Steve Rienks, PE, PMP who is the Director of Engineering at American Surveying & Engineering, P.C. We uncovered a ton of collective wisdom during this episode and still remained friends when the dust settled. Some of the topics discussed include the challenges of working internationally, the 40% rule, importance of being well-rounded, mega projects, 6 constraints of project management, three legged stools, culture = community, managing work-life balance and the "personal timesheet"! Episode 126 - Andres Abeyta & Bootcamp GIS

We were joined this week by Andres Abeyta, Executive Director of Bootcamp GIS.  Our key discussion topic is: The Changing Paradigm in GIS Tech Education.  He has built a career out of developing content and courses for people to learn how to use GIS.  This spans universities, corporations, and the federal agencies.  His roles in both GIS Education and the rapidly growing EdTech sector make for some innovative discussion on the gap between what students are looking for and what universities are offering.  Students and instructors will be interested in his innovative GIS Certificate platform that offers everyone value due to speed, relevancy, and marketability. Episode 125 - Timothy Hawthorne & GeoBus

"Blind Faith" is having unquestioning belief in something. Our guest this evening (and his team) are perfect examples of this! Timothy "Tim" Hawthorne is a 2022 National Geographic Explorer, Associate Professor of GIS at UCF, recent recipient of the UCF Teaching Incentive Program Award, GeoBus Founder and now a Geoholic Podcast veteran. Tim returns this week to share some exciting updates about GeoBus that are going prove that anything is possible when you have a team of like-minded individuals sharing a common goal. Gather around the transistor folks and prepare to be educated and entertained. This was a doozy! The guys were honored to have a living geospatial legend join them this week. Mr. Keith Masback carved out some time in his insanely busy schedule to provide a knowledge drop and we can't thank him enough for doing so. Keith is an advisor, investor, mentor, military veteran and connector for (primarily) early-stage startups working in geospatial intelligence and related fields. Just some of the topics discussed include geospatial intelligence, national security, space technology, GEOINT applications, being relevant is not good enough and how we need to take full advantage of this "geospatial moment".
