Episode 048 - Nate Gardner, PLS & Aaron Michalenko, PLS

This train's a rolling! We got to sit down with Nate Gardner, PLS & Aaron Michalenko, PLS this week to talk about their experiences providing emergency survey services for a train derailment accident that took place 7/29/2020 in Tempe, AZ. This was an around the clock operation that included scanning, drone captured imagery, 3D modeling and "on the fly" design survey services. There were plenty of challenges including numerous safety/HAZMAT concerns, air traffic as it was directly in one of the Sky Harbor Airport flight lines and a dynamic construction zone that was evolving by the minute.  PJ takes a trip to the "high" country. BS has an apparent brush with death. Welcome to this meeting of Geoholics Anonymous! This is another “round-table” format discussion touching on the current issues affecting the geomatics world. This panel is made up of Kent Groh, PLS (Host of The Geoholics), Ryan Kelly, CP (Co-host of The Geoholics), Joe Paiva, PE, PLS - CEO GeoLearn, James Coan PLS, CFedS - Renton Technical College, Todd Horton, PE, PLS - Meridian Geospatial Consulting & Parkland Community College and Adam McCartney, CST III - Party Chief at Maricopa County Department of Transportation and student at Great Basin College. The topic of this GA meeting focuses on land surveying and geomatics education. We touch on post-secondary education opportunities, the importance of technicians, apprenticeships, and achievable credentials such as the NSPS CST program.

Pedro comes from a family of land surveyors and has been working in the field for over 24 years. He shares what it is like to survey in Spain and the obstacles surveyors must overcome in his country. Geoholics Episode 046 - Elaine & Elly Ball

Hiya Geoholics! What a way to celebrate the one year anniversary of the podcast! If you know Elaine and Elly Ball, you know they are a couple of cheeky monkeys. We had a bloody good old chinwag with the ladies that you’re not going to want to miss. Elaine and Elly talked about coming from a family of over-achievers, how they juggle all their passions, the challenges land surveyors face in the UK (same as everywhere else!), how Get Kids in Survey got started and how the GKIS “community” has changed the landscape of the surveying world. We also find out that the Sunday Roast is the only meal one needs to survive in the UK and Bob’s your uncle. The guys had to get up early for this one and were a little cream crackered as a result. Welcome to this meeting of Geoholics Anonymous! This is another “roundtable” format discussion touching on the current issues affecting the geomatics world. This panel is made up of Kent Groh, LS (Host of The Geoholics), Ryan Kelly, CP (Co-host of The Geoholics), Linda Anderson (Project Manager for the North Central Texas Aerial Robotics STEM Initiative), Daphne Rickard (Executive Director of Career and Technical Education for Fort Worth ISD), Candy Slocum (Executive Director of North Central Texas InterLink, Inc.) and Stephanie Tennyson (Career and Technical Education Coordinator for the Fort Worth Independent School District). The topic of this GA meeting focuses on the S.T.E.M. initiative. We touch on the history of STEM in the US, why there is a shortage of skilled workers in many of the STEM occupations (including land surveying), the K-12 STEM continuum model and how industry leaders can get involved by paying it forward for the betterment of their respective professions.

This panel is made up of Kent Groh, LS (Host of The Geoholics), Ryan Kelly, CP (Co-host of The Geoholics), David Acosta, LS (Co-Owner of Construction Survey Technologies, Inc. & NSPS Diversity Committee Chairperson), Roxanne Nimmer, LS (Survey Manager @ Audubon Field Services), Hasmitha Rayasam (Research Assistant at Boston University & Sustainability Chair for Graduate Women in Science and Engineering Marketing @ BU) and Anna Rios, LS (Project Manager @ Landesign). The topic of this GA meeting focuses on diversity. We scratch the surface of this timely subject matter with some very poignant and humbling discussions touching on the past, present and future challenges the geomatics world faces.

Episode 045 - Darryl Horsman & Korey Dropkin

If you are like 90% of human beings that are closet curlers, you are in for a treat! We were lucky enough to get to spend some time with elite curlers Darryl Horsman & Korey Dropkin. Our discussion covers the sport from its great history, the role that USCA/USA Curling plays, the new documentary Anything is Possible that both Darryl & Korey star in and their inspiring curling careers. Darryl has provided curling instruction to over 18000 people from beginner to the elite level. Korey has recently released KD’s Club a virtual instruction platform for all curlers under 21. We also touched on the unique challenges that both curling and land surveying share. PJ is now planning an Icelandic expedition. BS has a thing for Zac Efron and wants to stay stupid so his brain doesn’t explode. DD places an order for the new Bronco. Please continue to support our FOTP. O…M…G…if you only listen to one Geoholics Podcast make it this one (kidding…listen to all of them)! The boys welcome the one and only Cameron Hughes to the show. Cameron is best known for being a professional Crowd Igniter having performed at over 1500 events and being awarded The Best Act in Sports! His story is both amazing and inspirational. Cam talks about how the “just get up” movement started, where it’s taken him, and his upcoming book. His energy is nothing less than infectious and we had a blast experiencing it!
